First surprises at the Sparkassen Trophy

Undoubtedly the biggest surprise today came from Croatian qualifier Franjo Raspudic (ATP 775) against Marcelo Tomas Barrios, who is considered a promising talent on the international tennis scene. The 18-year-old Chilean was in the top 2015 of the junior world rankings in 5 and is currently ranked 463rd in the world rankings. The first two, very even sets, were each decided by a single break and ended 6:4 4:6 from Raspudic's perspective. The third movement then developed into a real crime thriller. With the score at 4:4, Barrios missed a total of four break chances. In contrast, with the score at 6:5 and Barrios serving, a single match point was enough for Raspudic to finish the game as the winner.

“I played a good game, but my serve was a little inconsistent,” said Raspudic after his match. His opponent in the next round will most likely be top seed defending champion Federico Gaio. “I know Gaio and I’m not afraid of him. We played against each other at a Futures in Norway last fall. It was a very close match that I narrowly lost in three sets,” said the 25-year-old Croatian.

Doubles: Dryer/Gitzl lose out in round one

Also in round 2 are the two Italians Francesco Picco (ATP 491) after his three-set win against qualifier Rafael Matos (6:1, 3:6, 6:1) and Adelchi Virgili (ATP 560) after his triumph over qualifier Giovanni Oradini from Rovereto. In today's pure qualifying duel, Marcel Felder defeated the German Sebastian Prechtel 7:6, 6:2.

In the first round of the double competition, the South Tyroleans Moritz Trocker and Daniel Gitzl faced Zdenek Kolar/Bastian Malla. As expected, the Kolar/Malla double proved to be too big for the young players of TC Rungg. Trocker and Gitzl said goodbye to the tournament with 1:6, 1:6.

Surprisingly, the junior Wimbledon winners in doubles and fellow favorites in Rungg, Orlando Luz and Marcelo Zorman (ATP 823), were also kicked out of the competition. They lost to Marcel Barrios/Juan Pablo Ficovich 2:6, 6:7. Also in the next round are Della Bortolotti/Moncagatto (7:5, 6:4 against Dalla Valle/Berrettini), Della Tommasina/Sinicropi (6:4, 6:3 against Summaria/Ramazzotti) and Di Nicola/Picco (6: 3, 4:6, 10:6 against Baldi/Virgili), Leite/Matos (6:4, 7:6 against Borgo Frigerio) and Cachin/Paz (6:3, 7:5 against Sorgi/Felder).

In the last game of the day, number one seeds Jonathan Eysseric and Jose Hernandez-Fernandez (ATP 404) defeated Walter Trusendi and Matteo Viola 7:5, 6:3.

All topaz in action on Tuesday

The first round of the individual grid will be completed on Tuesday. All of the top seeds from this year's Sparkassen Trophy 2016 will be on display. Starting with Federico Gaio, the current number 158 in the world rankings, who will compete with the self-confidence of two tournament wins within a month. His opponent is Filippo Baldi, who received a wild card for the main draw. Zdenek Kolar's (ATP 257) first individual appearance is also eagerly awaited. The 19-year-old Czech recently reached the semi-finals of the Challenger tournament in Prague - tomorrow he will meet Joao Pedro Sorgi (ATP 533) in Rungg. Another highlight of the first round day is the game between Juan Pablo Paz (ATP 330) and Orlando Luz (ATP 520), who will certainly be looking for redemption after his elimination in the doubles.

Horst Rieder's (TC Rungg) performance against Jose Hernandez-Fernandez is interesting from a South Tyrolean perspective. The latter is currently number 296 in the world rankings and the winner of the ITF Futures last week in Bolzano.

First surprises at the Sparkassen Trophy

There was a real surprise at the Sparkassen Trophy on Monday in both singles and doubles. In both cases, Chilean young hopeful Marcelo Barrios played a central role. On Tuesday, all the top seeds will take part in the action. The game starts at 10 a.m. and entry is free.
