Federer defeats Berrettini and retains semi-final chance

The Swiss won his second group game against the Italian debutants from London on Tuesday 7:6 (7:2), 6:3. At the start on Sunday, Federer suffered an unexpected defeat against the Austrian Dominic Thiem.

On the last matchday of the preliminary round, the 38-year-old will now face his long-term rival Novak Djokovic, who will face Thiem in the evening (21 p.m.). Only the top two from the “Björn Borg” group reach the knockout phase. Federer has won the elite tournament of the eight best of the season six times so far; before his 17th participation, he had only been eliminated once in the group phase.

Federer acted very effectively against Berrettini at the beginning and kept the rallies short, especially with his service. However, because his opponent hardly allowed any chances on his own serve, the first set went into a tiebreak after just 36 minutes. There the 20-time major winner made full use of his technical superiority.

Federer started the second round with the first break of the day. When the score was 4:3, he had to fight for a long time in his service game, but ultimately held his lead and made everything clear with another break a little later. After 1:18 hours he recorded his second victory in the second duel with Berrettini.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev started the tournament the day before with an impressive two-set win against Rafael Nadal. His next opponent is the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday (21 p.m.). The winner in the gigantic London o2 World can win up to 2,9 million dollars and 1500 world ranking points.
