Federer flies out of the world rankings – a novelty for Sinner

Despite winning his fourth Wimbledon title in a row, Novak Djokovic has slipped further in the world tennis rankings than he has in almost four years. The 35-year-old Serb fell from third to seventh position. Because of the ban against Russian and Belarusian professionals following Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, no world ranking points were awarded at Wimbledon. Djokovic thus lost the 2000 points for his victory last year. The last time it was as low as it is today was in August 2018.

The world rankings are still led by the Russian Daniil Medvedev ahead of Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. The new third is the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who was unable to compete in the semi-finals of the grass classic due to injury. Due to the points not being awarded, Australian Nick Kyrgios's entry into the finals in the rankings is of no use either; the 27-year-old slipped from position 40 to 45.

Since Roger Federer hasn't played a tournament for a year since Wimbledon 2021, the 40-year-old no longer appears in the world rankings for the first time in a long time. Federer was first listed in the ranking in September 1997 and later led it for 310 weeks. This record has now been surpassed by Djokovic with 373 weeks. Federer underwent surgery on his right knee for the third time last August. So far this year he has, among other things, confirmed his participation in the Laver Cup at the end of September, the duel between a European team and a world team. Sinner is Italy's number 1 Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, is on the rise. The Wimbledon quarter-finalist from Sexten made up three positions and, in tenth place, scratched his best world ranking (9). He already has another personal record: as of this Monday, Sinner is Italy's best tennis player. Matteo Berrettini, who was recently slowed down by Corona and was the best Azzurro in the ranking for a long time, fell back to 15th place.

This is the first time in around a decade that a South Tyrolean is the best tennis player from the boot state. It was last Andreas Seppi , who had become Italy's number one. The 38-year-old from Kalter is ranked 179th in the new ranking. Seppi had originally planned to play the ATP tournament in Bastad this week, but did not make the cut for qualification due to his world ranking positioning. He will hit the Challenger in Trieste next Monday. Sinner is currently in action at the ATP 500 clay court tournament in Hamburg. Wimbledon winner in 23rd position As was the case with Djokovic and Kyrgios, the women's players who were successful at Wimbledon did not benefit either. The sensational winner Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) remains number 23, her final opponent Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) fell from second to fifth place. The Polish Iga Swiatek remains in the lead.
