Federico Gaio wins Sparkasse Trophy in Rungg

Interesting detail: Gaio only decided at the very last moment to play the tournament in Rungg instead of the higher-class Challenger in Prague. So he asked tournament director Dietmar Pfeifer for a wild card. Now he is the winner of the Sparkasse Trophy. Gaio went into the final today as the big favorite. On the one hand he, the fifth-seeded co-favorite, on the other hand the talented Bahamonde, who only slipped into the main draw in Rungg thanks to a wild card from the Italian Tennis Association and became the big surprise of the tournament week.

Two wild cards in the final

In front of packed spectator stands, the two finalists were clearly nervous. At 3:3 and 15:40 Gaio found the first break points, but couldn't use them. Bahamonde held up well against the favorites and had the equalizer at 4:5 and 40:30. But Bahamonde missed a simple forehand, then hit a light backhand volley next to the sideline, and suddenly Gaio had break and set point at the same time. He took advantage of it ice coldly to make it 6:4. Anyone who had thought that Gaio would now march through was mistaken. Bahamonde immediately broke to make it 1-0, but Gaio hit back with the rebreak. Then Gaio pulled away with another break to make it 4-1. Gaio couldn't let the break get out of his hands, even if Bahamonde rose up again for Gaio at 5:3 and 30:0 and found a break point at 30:40. Gaio fended him off and after an hour and a half converted the first match point to make it 6:3.

Strong line-up: 60 athletes from 15 nations This marks the end of a Sparkasse Trophy that was undoubtedly one of the most competitive in tournament history. This year too, the Sparkassen Trophy, with its eight-day duration, has confirmed that it is an absolute highlight of the South Tyrolean sports summer - and one of the best tournaments in its category worldwide! For eight days, 60 athletes from 15 nations showed absolute world-class tennis in mid-summer temperatures - with free entry. Several Davis Cup players, numerous promising talents and professionals who have already defeated top 100 players this year, offered the audience spectacular rallies and close matches. “We can be satisfied with the standard offered and also with the audience response. "Despite the hot summer weather, the audience responded well to our offer," says organizing committee boss Christian Pfeifer, summing it up positively.
