Ferrer shows Seppi the limits in Paris

After Andreas Seppi moved into the second round without losing a set against Santiago Giraldo and later into the third round against Juan Monaco, he was denied a place in the round of 16. The Kalterer player lost to number five seed David Ferrer after just under two and a half hours of play. The Spaniard didn't drop a set for the third match in a row and thus kept his clean slate.

Seppi had a difficult time from the start on Saturday at lunchtime and quickly fell behind. Two early breaks helped Ferrer confidently win the set. Seppi was able to fend off three set points at 1:5 and 0:40 and reduce the score to 2:5, but then clearly lost 2:6.

In the second set, Ferrer took the lead again with a break 3-1. Afterwards, however, the South Tyrolean found his way better, equalized to 3:3 and from then on bravely stood up to the Iberian. In the second round, both opponents served twice each. The decision therefore had to be made in a tiebreak. And it was clearly 7:2 in Ferrer's favor.

The current number six in the world then needed just 38 minutes to win the third set 3:3 after a 6:3 tie and thus deal Seppi the knockout blow.

Top 10 players remain a red flag for Seppi

For Seppi, this was the 65th defeat in his 71st match against a top ten player. In addition, he failed to break the taboo against Ferrer this time either. Even in the seventh meeting, the 30-year-old from Überetscher didn't manage to win a single set against the Spaniard. In the balance sheet of direct duels, Ferrer now leads 7-0. However, the Kalterer native can console himself for this defeat with 72.000 euros in prize money.
