Finals in Miami! This Jannik Sinner is incredible

It's crazy what this Jannik Sinner is doing at the moment. The 19-year-old from Sexten reached the final of a Masters tournament for the first time in his career on Friday evening. For better perspective: After the Grand Slams, this series is the highest in the entire tennis circuit. Sinner has set another huge milestone in his career - in only his third Masters tournament!

In the semi-finals, the South Tyrolean beat Roberto Bautista Agut 5:7, 6:4, 6:4. The Spaniard is number 12 in the ATP rankings and eliminated none other than Daniil Medvedev, the current world number 2, in the quarterfinals. Now the 32-year-old had to admit defeat to Sinner again after leaving the field as a loser in Dubai 16 days ago. The shooting star is only the fourth teenager in the Miami final after Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Final on Sunday evening Thanks to this victory, the Pusterer has moved up in the world rankings: he is currently in 31st place, but by reaching the final he will be at least in 22nd place from Monday. If he wins the final, he would move up to 14th place and even top Andreas Seppi's South Tyrolean all-time record (number 18). In the final on Sunday (19 p.m. CEST), the 19-year-old will face Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 37), who surprisingly won the semi-final against Andrey Rublev (7) 6:3, 6:4.

The semi-final was a thriller in which Sinner once again showed off his great strength: his mentality. In the first sentence, the Sesto player was still a bit nervous: he made many avoidable mistakes and missed important points. Bautista Agut knew how to take advantage of this, played it safe and barely gave up a point. A winning formula: After both players had each served once at the beginning, the Spaniard converted another break at 5:5 and brought the set to a close. Sinner already looked like the sure loser The second section was balanced for a long time. The seventh game turned out to be decisive for this set, but perhaps also for the entire game. When the score was 3:3, Sinner was 0:40 behind on his own serve. If Bautista Agut had made that break, who knows whether the youngster would have made it again. But the South Tyrolean kept his nerve, fended off all three break chances, then destroyed a fourth break point and finally won the game. Sinner was now brimming with self-confidence and finally took the set with a break to 6:4.

So we entered the final, crucial section. And here Bautista Agut initially turned up the heat and scored 13 (!) points in a row. Sinner was behind 1:3 - also because of a conceded break. But it seemed as if the shooting star was just catching his breath in those minutes in order to achieve a fantastic finish. A magnificent finish Suddenly he was the dominant player on the pitch, letting the Spaniard run, forcing him to make mistakes, making him nervous. He got the break back without losing any points and continued his aggressive and now very clean game until the end. After two and a half hours, Sinner finally had the first match point available - when his opponent was serving - which he coldly used to make it 6:4.

Sinner is therefore aiming for his third ATP title on Sunday. He won the first two in Sofia and Melbourne - those were still 250cc tournaments back then. Now he is in the final of a 1000. Great!
