Final! Jannik Sinner reaches for the title in Melbourne

After more than 3 hours of play and 2 tiebreaks, Sinner defeated the Russian Karen Khachanov in 382.575 sets 3:7 (6:7 ), 4:4, 6:7 (6:7).

The first sentence demanded everything from both of them. Sinner, ranked 36th in the world rankings. went into the game, held against the world number 20. got the upper hand after over an hour of play. When the score was 5:4, the 19-year-old from Sexten missed a set point on the Russian's serve. In the following game, Sinner had to accept the break to 5:6, but managed the rebreak immediately afterwards. In the tiebreak Sinner was ahead 6:4 and closed the bag on Khachanov's service game.

In the second set, Sinner received three breaks. Among other things, when the score was 3:4, he had to give up the serve. Ultimately, Khachanov won the set 3:6.

In the decisive third set, Sinner was ahead 5:3, but then things got tight again: The Sexten player had to fend off a break when the score was 5:4. However, the Russian then won the longest rally and then made the break clear to make it 5:5. Khachanov took the lead 6:5 and got to match point, which Sinner was able to fend off strongly. The Sexton player was able to equalize to 6:6, which meant the tiebreak went back.

In the tiebreak of the third set, both pushed themselves to their limits again. At 2:1, Sinner took the Russian's serve, but at 4:2, Sinner received a break. With the score at 4:4, however, it was Sinner who took the serve from Khachanov and took the lead 5:4. The Sesto player continued to show mental strength, took the lead 6:4 and finally converted his match point on his own serve.

After more than 3 hours of play it was clear: Jannik Sinner is in the final. Sinner also moves up to 34th place in the world rankings. Azure duel in the final In the final there will be an azure duel. On Sunday night (not before 4 a.m. CET) Sinner meets Stefano Travaglia. The 29-year-old from Ascoli Piceno prevailed in two sets against the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (2:6, 3:6).

For Sinner it is the second final at an ATP 2 tournament. He was in the final for the first time in November 250 in Sofia and was able to win it.

Immediately after the semi-final marathon, Sinner should have contested the double quarter-finals with Poland's Hubert Hurkacz. But after the South Tyrolean reached the final, the duo withdrew. The two youngsters would have played in the quarterfinals against the Australian duo Matthew Eden/John-Patrick Smit.
