Final in Montpellier: Sinner reaches for the title

The ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier has not been a good place for Sinner so far. In 2020 and 2021 he failed in the first round in the southern French coastal town. On the third attempt the knot seems to have broken. After seeing his friend on Friday Lorenzo Sonego had sent home with an uneventful victory, Even the French prodigy Arthur Fils couldn't do much in the semi-finals on Saturday. Sinner needed a little more than an hour and a half to wrap up the victory with 7:5, 6:2.

South Tyrol's athlete of the year is in the final of an ATP tournament for the eighth time. His record so far is outstanding: He won the title six times, only having to admit defeat at the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami in 2021. On Sunday at 15 p.m. Sinner will face Maxime Cressy (ATP 51), who surprisingly beat Holger Rune (ATP 9), who was top seed in Montpellier, 7:5, 6:7 and 7:6.

The experience makes the difference In the semi-finals, the Pusterer lived up to his role as favorite - even if 18-year-old Fils demanded a lot from him in the first set. The young Frenchman is playing in only his second ATP tournament in Montpellier and promptly stormed into the semi-finals. He initially defended himself bravely against Sinner, but conceded the break in the first round when the score was 5:5 and had to give up the set. “Perhaps the experience made the difference here,” said Sinner, who at 21 has already experienced a lot in the tennis circus.

South Tyrol's young star won the second set in a hurry (37 minutes). The key to success that day was Sinner's perfectly functioning serve: If his service went into the opponent's court, Sinner won 82 percent of the points. Fils couldn't do much about that. Now the South Tyrolean is ready for the final showdown.
