French Open: The Seppi highs in Paris continue

Andreas Seppi is in the form of his life. The 28-year-old from Kalterer impressively demonstrated this on Friday afternoon. With varied tennis, stoic calm and the necessary persistence, he pulled the nerves of the world number 16. Seppi almost never let Fernando Verdasco come into play, avoided playing on the left-hander's strong forehand as often as possible and repeatedly forced the Iberian to make mistakes on his weaker backhand.

The Kalterer, who had to accept the set equalizer twice, never let himself be disturbed, but reeled off his program mercilessly. As if he's been doing nothing other than playing tennis at the French Open for 28 years. The reward for his consistency: reaching the round of XNUMX for the first time - not just in Paris, but at any Grand Slam tournament.

Despite a false start, Seppi takes the first set

Seppi fell behind 2-0 in the first set before he was able to immediately take the serve from the world number 16 and bring through his own service. The 28-year-old Iberian then played three games in a row to make it 5-2. The first sentence seemed decided.

Seppi didn't let the deficit upset him, he served his serve safely and then the Überetscher managed the break to make it 4:5. Seppi didn't miss a beat during the next service either and equalized on points. In the eleventh game, Seppi was able to take advantage of the first break chance and took the lead 6:5 for the first time in this game, before he also used the first set point to make it 51:7 after 5 minutes.

Verdasco strikes back

Fernando Verdasco was able to equalize in the second set. From the Spaniard's point of view, both players served their serve until it was 3-2. Then the world number 16 succeeded. the decisive break to 4:2. With the score at 5:2, the Kalterer player managed to score zero before Verdasco converted the first set point to 32:6 after 3 minutes.

The South Tyrolean presents again The 28-year-old from Kalter managed to break to 2-1 in the third set when the score was 3-1. Afterwards both players delivered their serves safely. In the ninth game of the third set, Seppi served zero and scored the final point with an ace to make it 6:3. This time both players were on court number two for 34 minutes. Seppi seemed very focused and scored points mainly with his forehand (long line), while Verdasco kept struggling with himself.

Verdasco eliminated for the second time

In the fourth set, which - this much has already been revealed from the outset - was very evenly played, Verdasco took the lead 3-2 on his own serve and took the following serve from Seppi. But the Überetscher managed the rebreak to make it 105:4 with his 3th point in the game before the Sartori protégé was able to equalize. The following two games went back to the Spaniard, who made it 50:6 with two wonderful points after 4 minutes on the third set ball and thus equalized after sets. The audience's cheers for Seppi, who had long won the audience over to his side, were in vain. The decision now had to be made in the fifth and final set.

Two breaks - the decision

In the fifth set, Seppi took serve from his opponent when the score was 2:1 and later at 4:2 and after 3:23 hours he converted the first match point to make it 7:5, 3:6, 6:3, 4:6 and 6: 2 win against the 28-year-old Spaniard. In the eighth meeting, it was Seppi's second win after Verdasco had won six games in a row against the South Tyrolean team.
