A new era begins for Jannik Sinner

Sinner and Vagnozzi only trained together for the first time on Monday near Monte Carlo, and their baptism of fire is already on the agenda next week. After a four-week break, a positive corona test and the cancellations in Rotterdam and Marseille, Sinner is starting at the ATP 500 tournament in the Persian Gulf, which starts on Monday.

In the entry list for the draw (today at 9 a.m. CET), Sinner is number 4 behind Novak Djokovic, Andrej Rublew and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Sinner played his last match 24 days ago on January 26th in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and clearly lost in 3 sets against Stefanos Tsitsipas. It was the only defeat so far this season after 8 wins. The team is still under construction Sinner announced his new head coach on Thursday, but not who the other members of his support staff are. There is also no mention (yet) of the so-called “super coach” Magnus Norman from Sweden. After cutting ties with the Piatti team in Bordighera, Sinner also needs a fitness trainer or fitness coach and a physiotherapist. That could be Davide Cassinelli, a confidant of Vagnozzi. The 38-year-old from Ascoli Piceno, who has set up a well-running academy in San Benedetto del Tronto in the Marche, is no stranger to South Tyrol, having spent many years of his career in our country. In the summer of 1996, the then 13-year-old came to Kaltern. Together with his friend Thomas Holzer, Vagnozzi was one of Italy's best players born in 1983. At the side of Andreas Seppi Vagnozzi stayed in Überetsch for many years under coach Massimo Sartori and began his professional career alongside Holzer and Andreas Seppi and Alex Vittur, who were a year younger. The Kalterer troupe became friends for life and a close-knit community that also played successfully in the A2 series. “Vagno” and Seppi played many tournaments together at the beginning of their careers, including doubles, and won the U2001 Italian championship title for TC Kaltern in 18. In 2010 they reached the doubles final together at the ATP tournament in Bastad, and in 2012 Vagnozzi won the Sparkasse Trophy in Rungg.

In his playing career, which he ended in 2015, Vagnozzi reached number 161 in the world rankings (2011). He soon embarked on a coaching career. And the successes did not stop there. Under his leadership, Marco Cecchinato made it to the semi-finals of the 2018 French Open and reached number 18 in the world rankings after defeating Novak Djokovic. Stefano Travaglia led Vagnozzi from beyond the top 100 to 60th place before the collaboration ended last year. And so the circle closes. Through the mediation of his friend Alex Vittur from Bruneck, friend, advisor and close confidant of Jannik Sinner, the 38-year-old Vagnozzi was hired as the new coach.
