Seppi played at the US Open for the 18th time on Tuesday evening (CEST), the 66th Grand Slam tournament of his extraordinary career. However, there is no trace of age-weariness in him - on the contrary! In the opening round he defeated Marton Fucsovics, who was significantly better placed in the world rankings, 15:13 (!) in the decisive tiebreak. With 2:6, 7:5, 6:4, 2:6, 7:6 Seppi follows Jannik Sinner into the second round. He had recently achieved his first ever victory in New York. In the duel between number 41 in the world and Seppi, who is in position 89 in the ATP rankings, the roles were initially clearly assigned. Fucsovics confidently played his all-round game while the first set completely passed Seppi. But at the start of the second half of the game, the South Tyrolean caught himself. Now an exciting duel developed, which from then on was fought completely on equal terms. When the score was 5:5, Seppi used his first break point in the game, paving the way to winning the set. This sense of success made the veteran's chest significantly bigger, and he now showed his best tennis at times and repeatedly forced his counterpart to make mistakes. An example? Seppi's patient and flawless game in the tenth game of the third period, when he won the set on the opponent's serve. Fucsovics' nerves were so frayed that he took out his anger on his gaming equipment. Seppi cancels 5 match points With his outburst of anger, the Hungarian himself caused a hello wake-up call. From then on he was much more present in the game again. The result: A clear 6:2 and a subsequent deciding set. This developed into a real battle of nerves in which Seppi initially snatched the serve from his opponent, but promptly received the re-break. When the score was 6:5, the 37-year-old missed his first match point by failing to get a simple backhand slice over the net. But even if Fucsovics subsequently forced the tiebreak, Seppi didn't let his missed big chance upset him. Rather, he really blossomed in the decisive rallies and contributed to the tiebreak becoming a big show in which both opponents canceled a number of match points. Unusual cheering scenes The duel seemed never-ending in those moments – until Seppi brought it to a close after four hours and eight minutes. When the score was 14:13, he used his sixth match point in the game. What followed was a real outburst of emotion from the otherwise cool South Tyrolean, who first sank to the ground and later jumped across the court with a clenched fist after shaking hands. By then it was clear to every observer: his 18th US Open participation was already something very special - no matter how Seppi's second round match against the number ten seed was Hubert Hurkacz may fail.
