Jannik, the locomotive: semi-finals in Sofia!

You have to imagine it visually. A locomotive departing from the station. Slowly, sedately, even ponderously, she rolls forward for the first few meters. The massive machinery groans under the enormous amount of force generated in these moments. But then things start rolling, suddenly everything runs smoothly, and soon the locomotive in question is plowing through the landscape at high speed - and finally stops at the “Semifinale” train station. This is roughly how you can imagine Jannik Sinner's quarter-finals in Sofia. The world number 10 didn't start in the best shape against Aleksandar Vukic (ATP 144), but quickly found his game and finally won 6:2, 6:3 - after just 1.20 hours. The Sesto player's impressive series in the Bulgarian capital continues: Sinner was able to win the tournament in 2020 and 2021 and this year he is also on the right track. In the semi-finals on Saturday, the young star will face the Dane Holger Rune (ATP 31). Seven games in a row The 21-year-old got off to a slow start late on Friday afternoon. Sinner had to fend off four break chances in the first game. The serve in particular caused him problems at the beginning, so he immediately made two double faults. After that the machinery started running and Sinner picked up two gears from 2-2 at the latest. That was too much for his opponent, who was ranked 134 positions lower. The South Tyrolean secured seven games in a row across all sets. After a 6-2 lead in the first half, he took a 3-0 lead in the second half. Although Sinner gave up his serve when the score was 4:2, he immediately got the break back with an irresistible game. The Pusterer then served to win the set. Although this game turned out to be a lengthy affair (as is the case with the braking distance of a locomotive just before the platform), the third match point was there. The semi-finals were therefore perfect – and the dream of a third title in Sofia is more alive than ever.
