Semifinals: Verena Hofer rocks her home tournament

Hofer triumphed 53:6, 2:6 after just 3 minutes of play and is now in an ITF semi-final for the first time in five months.

The host, number 792 in the world, dominated the first set to a T and was promptly ahead 4-1. After just 21 minutes of play, Hofer converted her first set to 6-2. The second period began with seven breaks. In the eighth game, Hofer finally broke her serve with two aces and pulled away to 5:3. After just 53 minutes she finally closed the bag and won 6:3.

Fourth ITF semi-final for the Val Gardena native

Hofer is now in the semi-finals of an ITF tournament for the first time since mid-June. She has only made it into the top four three times in her career (2014 and 2016 in Santa Margherita di Pula and this year in Hammamet). In the semi-finals tomorrow, the Val Gardena woman will face the Italian Federica Di Sarra (WTA 14) in the second match after 569 p.m., who defeated the Czech Vendula Zovincova 6:4, 6:4 today.

There were two surprises in the other two quarterfinal singles matches. The Russian Alina Silich beat the number 2 seeded Italian Stefania Rubini in three sets 2:6, 6:4, 6:2 after just over two hours of play, while the 21-year-old Belgian Helene Scholsen, number 7 of the tournament, the number 4 seeded “Azzurra” easily brought Camilla Scala to her knees 6:3, 6:2.

Tomorrow Hofer and Di Sarra as well as Scholsen and Silich will face each other in the semi-finals (at 14 p.m.). Curious: The Belgian and the Russian will then play together in the doubles final against the Russian top favorites, Alena Fomina/Ekaterina Kazionova, at 18 p.m. Today they eliminated Anna-Giulia Remondina/Dalila Spiteri in the super tiebreak with 3:6, 6:4, 10:6.

Semifinals: Verena Hofer rocks her home tournament

Verena Hofer is unstoppable in Ortisei. The 20-year-old local hero clearly beat Czech Katerina Vankova (WTA 15.000) in two sets in the quarterfinals of the $847 “Raiffeisen ITF Val Gardena Südtirol” tournament on Thursday evening.
