Jannik Sinner's dream ends after an hour

After the Tournament victory in Montpellier Jannik Sinner marched through the ATP 500 competition in Rotterdam this week with a broad chest and outstanding tennis. But the final was the final destination: the South Tyrolean lost to the former world number one, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, at the end of a fascinating duel 7:5, 2:6, 2:6.

The encounter was fascinating because both players played their best tennis and impressively showed why they are among the best in their field in the world. However, the balance of power was divided: Sinner dominated the first set. After an hour, Medvedev got the upper hand and finally earned his fifth victory in his fifth duel with Sinner with flawless shots.

Sinner immediately ignites the turbo At first Medvedv started passively and waited for Sinner to make a mistake. But they didn't come. On the contrary: when the score was 2:1, the youngster took the serve from the Russian. Medvedev managed the rebreak a little later, but that only spurred Sinner on even more. When the score was 6:5, he first placed a pass ball accurately, then he played the next fantastic point and brilliantly used his first set ball. What the South Tyrolean had shown up until then was simply outstanding!

In the second sentence, however, the tide turned. Sinner's first serve stalled, and he was unlucky with a net roller - and Medvedev was already one break ahead. The 2021 US Open champion now showed a much more aggressive style of play and a little later moved to 4-1 with the next serve win, paving the way to winning the set.

Huge prize money and important ATP points After that, Sinner could no longer find his game, while Medvedev acted like a robot. There was nothing left to counter the flawless, aggressive punches of the Russian exceptional talent. The 21-year-old fought like a lion, but his strength increasingly failed him in the eighth game within ten days. He had his serve taken away twice in the third set, but he was unable to convert his only break point. This meant that Medvedev's tournament victory could no longer be averted.

Sinner leaves Rotterdam with prize money of $208.730 and 300 world ranking points in his luggage. He now has to fill his energy reserves before the ATP 250 tournament in Marseille next week.

Jannik Sinner was in the final of an ATP tournament nine times and almost always - i.e. seven times - he left the field as the winner. This series suffered a major blow on Sunday in Rotterdam. An outstanding Daniil Medvedev was to blame for this.
