A bitter setback: Sinner succumbs to Alcaraz

To the astonishment of many, the duel that was eagerly awaited by the entire tennis world did not take place on the center court, but on a smaller side court. Sinner might have liked that, as the conditions on Court 1 are a little faster than on the main court. In the end, however, this only played a minor role, as the two players who undisputedly had the hardest hits on the entire ATP tour faced each other. Because the youngsters are not (yet) the best servers and there were a lot of rallies, the fans were treated to a lot of them. Ultimately, the player who took the initiative more often and made fewer mistakes won: Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard won 7:6, 7:5.

The coaching gurus Riccardo Piatti and Juan Carlos Ferrero had sent their protégés onto the pitch with clearly recognizable tactics. You should try to dictate the point with the first shot after the serve or after the return and to push your opponent onto the defensive so that they cannot develop their power. A tough struggle developed from the start: the first two games, which ended with as many breaks, lasted exactly a quarter of an hour. Overall, Alcaraz got into the game a little better, but was unable to gain a decisive advantage. Alcaraz doesn't allow anything After the hard-fought opening phase, both of them played their service games confidently. It went to the tiebreak, in which Alcaraz played a series of incredible points at the beginning, also had the necessary luck on his side with two net rollers, pulled away unassailable to 4-0 and won the set after 66 minutes. Sinner then left the square to collect himself.

When he returned, the pace on the pitch did not change. Nobody could gain an advantage. Neither Alcaraz, who continued to play well, nor Sinner, who couldn't quite match his outstanding performances of the last few weeks, seemed a bit tired. But he fought – and fended off a total of six break chances in the first three games of the second set. Nevertheless, he never found the desired rhythm, made too many mistakes in his own service games - in contrast to Alcaraz - and conceded the decisive break when the score was 5:5. The Spaniard then had no problems closing the bag on his own serve. Hope and tremble With the defeat, Sinner lost important points regarding the ATP finals - especially considering the results of his closest competitors. Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie are all in the round of 250 in Paris - and also have a good draw. If Sinner wants to go to Turin, he has to hope that his opponents will soon be eliminated in Paris and score big points at the ATP XNUMX tournament in Stockholm next week.
