Historic day: Rungg celebrates double promotion to Serie A

This memorable day began with Paula Ormaechea, Verena Meliss, Susan Bandecchi, Claudia Giovine, Martina Spigarelli, Lara Pfeifer, Vickie Trocker, Anna Santa and their captain Manuel Gasbarri away from CT Bologna. After the 3-1 win in the first leg of the playoffs, a 2-2 draw was enough for the women to secure promotion. And that's how it happened: Giovine lost in the opening match, but then Ormaechea and Meliss turned the tables. The Argentinian won in the third set, the Kalterer then made short work of Giulia Martinelli, dispatching her 6:2, 6:2 and thus securing Rungg the necessary and much celebrated second victory. The double was no longer played because even a 2-2 final score could no longer shattered the South Tyroleans' dream of promotion.

Even more nerve-wracking was the performance of the men who were able to pop the corks at their home facility in Überetsch late in the evening. They made up for the 2-4 first leg defeat at TC Prato with a brilliant finish and two double wins in the Champions tiebreak. After the regular games ended with a 4-2 win for Rungg, Horst Rieder and Marco Bortolotti had to play again in the deciding doubles. In the exciting final they defeated the Prato duo Iannacone/Stefanini 6:4 and 7:6. The promotion and thus the completion of this historic day for the TC Rungg, but also for South Tyrolean club tennis, was perfect.
