Horst Rieder and Vera Ploner are the new tennis national champions

A total of over 220 players took part in the state championship this year. Unfortunately, some top players decided not to take part in the Open class. But this should not detract from the performance of Horst Rieder from Völs, who won the men's competition and caused a surprise in the quarter-finals when he was able to eliminate Stefan Knapp, Karin Knapp's brother, in three sets. In the semi-finals, the 18-year-old from the Tennis Club Rungg swept Mattia Agosti from Meran off the court 6:2, 6:1 and today he left no stone unturned in the final and clearly defeated Michael Kerschbaumer from TC St. Christina-Wolkenstein 6:4, 6:2. This is Rieder's first national championship title; ten years ago he won the U8 VSS championship. The match was very even until 4:4, then Rieder pulled away. Kerschbaumer also had to deal with the extreme heat in the second set (the game was played at +36 degrees), perhaps because he was still in action at the Tyrolean Championships with the Tennis Club Innsbruck that morning. By the way, he helped the ITC stay in the league with a two-set win against Benjamin Bösch.

Ploner returns the favor to Hopfgartner In the women's category, Vera Ploner from Sand in Taufers took revenge on Jeannine Hopfgartner from Bruneck for the previous year's defeat and won the national championship title again after 2013. Ploner won in two hard-fought sets 7:5, 6:4. Both play with TC St. Georgen in the women's A2 series, but Ploner trains in Brixen and Hopfgartner in Bolzano. In the 3rd men's category, Mathis Pesarin from Bolzano was unable to defend his title from last year. This year he was eliminated in the semifinals against his teammate Aliosha Bona, who then clearly won the final against Martin Tappeiner 6:3, 6:2. Despite the defeat, the 44-year-old from St. Pauls caused the biggest surprise in this category when he knocked top-seeded Markus Innerebner from Bolzano out of the competition in the quarter-finals with 6:0, 7:6. In the semifinals, Tappeiner eliminated the strong Alex Laimer.

13-year-old Marion Viertler wins 3rd category Last year's finalist Elisa Crazzolara was also eliminated in the semi-finals of the women's category 3. The woman from Val Badia lost in the tiebreak of the third set against Marion Viertler. The 13-year-old from the Meran Tennis Club, who is coached by Renato Ercolani, then defeated Karen Sigmund from Vahrn 6:2, 7:6 in the final and was crowned the new national champion. Sigmund benefited from Bettina Paoli's retirement in the semi-finals, as she flew on holiday on Saturday and was therefore unable to continue playing. In the 4th category, there was a men's Überetsch duel between the former Serie A ice hockey player Lorenz Röggl (played for Eppan and Kaltern) and the 56-year-old Peter Plunger from Paulsen, who was the national champion of the classified C exactly 21 years ago player was. Röggl prevailed in three sets 3:6, 6:1, 6:3. In the women's category, 17-year-old Valentina Eccel Trappolin from Bolzano won against the Over 65 Italian champion Gertraud Rudolph. Eccel eliminated Sabine Stürz in the semifinals, Rudolph defeated Patrizia Gozzi.
