Imola: First ITF semi-final for Verena Meliss

The woman from Kaltern (WTA 527) narrowly lost the first set 4:6 after a break in the seventh game. In the second part of the game, both players were able to hold their serve until Meliss made it 6:5, then the TC Rungg player used her second break point to make it 7:5. This broke Kordolaimi's resistance.

In the third set, Meliss pulled away to 3-1, and after 2:25 hours of play she used her first match point to make the final score 6-3. For Meliss, it was her first win against Kordolaimi at the third attempt, after she had been clearly defeated twice in two $2015 tournaments in Sharm El Sheikh in 2016 and 10.000. In the semi-finals, Meliss will face the winner of the Italian derby between number 2 seed Stefania Rubini and Angelica Moratelli.

Weis in the doubles final Alexander Weis delivered the second success report of the day. At the $15.000 tournament in Tabarka today, the top seeds Weis/Arreche narrowly defeated the Argentinian duo Nicolas Bianchi/Gregorio Cordonnier 7:5, 3:6, 10:8 in the double semifinals. Weis played his 13th doubles semi-final on the ITF tour today, the fourth in the last four weeks.

The match was very even from the start. The 22-year-old from Bolzano and Arreche from Buenos Aires, who is two years older, were already 3:5 behind in the first set, but then secured four games in a row to win the set 7:5. In the second half of the game, the Argentinians Bianchi/Cordonnier got the break in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead and shortly afterwards closed the set to 6-3.

Weis/Arreche played again in the super tiebreak, promptly went 5-1 ahead and converted their second match point after 1:37 hours of play to make the final score 10-8. In the final, Weis/Arreche will meet the Dutch Maikel Borg/Max Houkes. For Weis it is the fourth doubles final, the second in a row. In Tabarka he secured the title 12 days ago with the Austrian David Pircher.

In the singles, however, Weis clearly failed in the quarter-finals today against the number 2 seed, the Argentinian young star Sebastian Baez (ITF 218), 1:6, 3:6. Weis had already lost the final in Tabarka a month ago against Baez 2:6, 4:6.

Imola: First ITF semi-final for Verena Meliss

Verena Meliss is in an ITF semi-final for the first time in her career. The 22-year-old defeated the Greek Eleni Kordolaimi (WTA 25.000) in three sets at the $537 tournament in Imola on Friday evening and moved into the top four.
