Jannik Sinner personally: “It wasn’t easy”

The man from Sexten is the youngest player in the top 100 – and has already shown that he can compete with the big boys. Sinner has his father Johann to thank for making it this far. “When I was seven years old and didn’t have a tennis racket in my hand for a whole year, he came and said, try again,” says the 18-year-old: “From that point on I enjoyed it.” Skiing was a priority Nevertheless, until the age of 13, Sinner's focus was not on tennis, but on skiing. He also enjoyed playing football. According to Sinner, at some point the moment came to decide on a sport. What he chose - and that it was the right one - is well known. But it was difficult for him to move to Bordighiera, where Riccardo Piatti took the South Tyrolean under his wing. In his academy, Sinner matured into the player he is today. “Of course it wasn’t easy at the beginning to leave my family and all my friends,” reveals Sinner: “But it was my decision and I still enjoy playing tennis. I’m really happy I made this decision.” Lead by example Sinner also fondly remembers his beginnings in Bordighiera. “I remember he (Piatti, editor's note) watching me, he was very happy to see me playing and said: 'Okay, that's a good boy. He can play tennis well,'” says Sinner. That definitely made his decision easier. The Pusterer also attaches great importance to being a good example on and off the tennis court. “That’s the most important thing for me.” He has the chance to show this on Monday at an invitation tournament in Berlin. His opponent is 42-year-old Tommy Haas, who has already retired, and says with a smile about the duel of the generations: “Jannik could be my son.”
