Jannik Sinner has a very big goal in mind

Jannik Sinner can check the box for qualifying for the final round of the Davis Cup. It's done. Now he is tackling the second big goal in the season finale. Like last year, he wants to qualify for the ATP Finals from November 2th to 5th in Turin at five tournaments. Not an easy undertaking, because in the world rankings since the beginning of the year, the “Race To Torino”, the Sesto native is currently only in 13th place with 20 points. 2220 points are missing from 14th place, which is currently occupied by Felix Auger-Aliassime. That is the goal, because Novak Djokovic, who is behind Sinner, is automatically qualified for the finals as the winner of a Grand Slam tournament (Wimbledon).

5 tournaments await the Pusterer this fall. At the Davis Cup in Casalecchio near Bologna, coach Simone Vagnozzi has announced his protégé's tournament planning until the end of the year. “Jannik was of course sad after the defeat against Carlos Alcaraz. And a little more when he saw that the Spaniard won in New York, but now he is aware that he has played a big tournament. Jannik really wanted to compete in the Davis Cup, even though he was a bit under the weather after the US Open,” reveals the 39-year-old. The calm before the storm This week training is on the agenda for his protégé. “After that, Jannik will play 3 tournaments in a row, Sofia, Nur-Sultan and Florence.” After another week’s break, the Pusterer will then compete in Vienna and take part in the last Masters tournament of the year in Paris-Bercy. “And the final round of the Davis Cup in Malaga is scheduled for the end of November.” The “Azzurri” qualified as group winners. Record winners USA, led by Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, await in the quarter-finals in Andalusia on November 24th. “It doesn’t take much to go a little further.” Sinners coach Simone Vagnozzi Overall, Vagnozzi is satisfied with the first 7 months under his leadership. “Jannik was in the quarterfinals of the last two Grand Slam tournaments. There's not much left to go a little further. We’re currently adding a few new things to his game.”

The Pusterer himself confirmed this at the press conference on Sunday evening after his first defeat in the Davis Cup against Mikael Ymer from Sweden (4:6, 6:3, 3:6). “We work a lot on serving and playing at the net and we don't always hit the right shot, but I'm happy with the season so far. Things could have been better, certainly, but also much worse. I was in the quarterfinals three times at the Grand Slam tournaments and I lost on match point in Cincinnati and at the US Open.”

Sinner can get 2500 points in the 5 planned tournaments in the next few weeks if he wins them all. That's hardly possible. Last year, Casper Ruud was in 8th place with 3760 points before the finals in Turin on November 8th and was the last player to qualify directly. Sinner was in 3395th place with 10 points and was the first substitute in Turin after Rafael Nadal's cancellation, where he was also allowed to play two matches instead of Matteo Berrettini.
