Jannik Sinner and the unfortunate Wimbledon premiere

That the game against the world number 48. would be difficult, Sinner knew. He was too shaky in his only grass match before Wimbledon presents. The naturalness that characterizes him on hard courts is not there on grass. This was also evident on Monday evening in London: Marton Fucsovics deservedly won the game after more than three hours with 5:7, 6:3, 7:5 and 6:3.

Before Sinner could make his main draw debut at the All England Club, the young Sesto native had to be patient for a long time. The extreme humidity had made the grass extremely slippery and therefore unplayable. Later it started to rain, so Sinner and Fucsovics didn't enter Court 17, which was lined with fans, until around 18 p.m. After an extended warm-up time, it was clear to both actors that the long wait had unsettled them. Sinner keeps a cool head There were four breaks in the first five games, although this was mainly due to the weakness of the server and not the strength of the receiver. After an initial feel-out, the opponents found their way into the game a little better. Sinner tried to play his usual powerful game, while Fucsovics tried to defuse it and at the same time create pinpricks. Because both made numerous mistakes, the level was manageable at the beginning. Only when Sinner led 6:5 after the four breaks mentioned did he increase his level. This resulted in the decisive game 7:5.

Unimpressed by this, the Hungarian improved at the beginning of the second section. At the same time, Sinner's serving performance dropped dramatically: When he put the first serve in the field, which only happened 46% of the time, he only won 61% of the points. Above all, the unreturned serves, which are so important on this surface, were almost completely absent. All these circumstances led to Fucsovics breaking three times and winning the set 6:3.

Sinner left the place to collect himself. However, this did not solve the problems. The South Tyrolean found neither his serve nor the rallies to find the right key to crack the rebellious Fucsovics. He often managed to take the initiative and push the youngster onto the defensive. Despite all the difficulties, Sinner fought on bravely and earned four break points, which he did not use. His opponent did better with the score at 6:5 in his favor and won the round. A broken neck for Sinner? Absolutely not!

He managed two breaks right at the start of the fourth set, but was unable to capitalize on them. Because in the following games, Fucsovics always hit back with a re-break. This turned out to be fatal, as the 29-year-old never came under pressure. Instead, he moved ahead to 5:3 and made everything clear a few moments later. Now to the Olympics Sinner says goodbye to England without a win and with the conscience that there is still a lot of work to do on grass. At least he can console himself with the fact that the hard court season will start again soon. The big goals are the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which begin in about a month, and the US Open, which takes place at the end of August.
