Jannik Sinner's tank is slowly emptying

The numbers are impressive: On Wednesday, Jannik Sinner – singles and doubles combined – played his 84th match this year. It is understandable that the fuel needle can sometimes be close to the red area and was shown at the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm. Because his prominent opponent Andy Murray also had a really strong day, the 20-year-old from Puster suffered a 6:7(4), 3:6 defeat in the second round (he had previously enjoyed a bye).

A defeat that is also bitter in terms of the world rankings. Because Sinner loses a total of 330 points due to the complicated points regulation, he will slip back to 11th place in the ATP ranking and will therefore not be in the top 10 over the winter. The young Sesto native will be able to get over it: 2021 was a brilliant year in which he won four tournaments and had numerous great moments. As a reminder: The shooting star started the year in position 36, and was now able to get a taste of the top 10. Strong Murray, tired Sinner Murray – who won a total of three Grand Slam titles in his career – fought a thrilling battle with Sinner. The Brit (ATP 143) showed that even after his injury break and at the age of 34, he is far from being a thing of the past.

The former world number 1 used all her experience in the crucial moments and repeatedly took the wind out of Sinner's sails. For the South Tyrolean, however, physical and mental fatigue became noticeable in many phases. For example, in the tie-break of the first set, in which a double fault by the sixth player led to 4:6 and set point Murray, which the Brit then converted.

While Sinner was largely on par with his 34-year-old counterpart in the first set, that changed in the second section. The player from Puster had a hard time finding the right rhythm, didn't seem that powerful and kept making slight mistakes. Murray, on the other hand, played his game confidently and showed his class again and again. For example, in the third game, in which he took serve from Sinner, and also in the ninth game, in which he converted the match point - also with the South Tyrolean serving.

The season isn't over yet for Jannik Sinner. He will be the substitute at the ATP Finals in Turin next week and will then compete in the Davis Cup with Italy. Afterwards he can enjoy a more than deserved break.
