Karin Knapp celebrated at the South Tyrolean Tennis Festival

Tennis state president Richard Weißensteiner was able to welcome more than 200 guests, including CONI boss Heinz Gutweniger, VSS president Günther Andergassen, the Bolzano sports assessor Angelo Gennaccaro and Franco Perchinelli from the main sponsor Volksbank. The big star of the tennis festival was Karin Knapp, who announced her retirement from active tennis at the Internazionali d'Italia on May 12th. At just 30 years old, she had to end her very successful career prematurely due to chronic knee problems. In February 2008, at the age of 20, she was already number 35 in the world rankings, but was repeatedly set back by injuries (five knee and two heart operations). But Knapp came back and rose to 2015rd place in the WTA computer at the end of August 33. During her career, the Luttacher won the FED Cup and two WTA tournaments (Tashkent 2013 and Nuremberg 2014) with the Italian national team in 2015 and reached the round of XNUMX at Wimbledon four years ago.

Since the summer, Karin Knapp has been the coach of Verena Hofer from Val Gardena, currently number 698 in the world and, with Verena Meliss, the best South Tyrolean tennis player. At the end of the year Knapp will be the mother of a girl for the first time. Knapp has been married to her former trainer and ex-professional Francesco Piccari since April 1, 2017 and has lived in Anzio near Rome for years.

Weißensteiner looks back on a successful season Weißensteiner thanked the Ahrntal native for her outstanding achievements: “With Andreas Seppi, you showed our young players that they can compete internationally.” In fact, in addition to Andreas Seppi (ATP 43), nine other South Tyroleans have now made it into the world rankings: Verena Meliss (WTA 638) and Verena Hofer (WTA 689) for women as well as Jannik Sinner (ATP 785), Alexander Weis (ATP 854), Georg Winkler (ATP 1105), Joy Vigani (ATP 1198), Manfred Fellin (ATP 1204), Moritz Trocker (ATP 1347) and Horst Rieder (ATP 1999) in the men's category. “And everyone has improved significantly compared to the previous year,” says Weißensteiner happily. He also recalled the successes of TC Rungg in Serie B, where both the women and men achieved promotion to Serie A2.

In total, the South Tyrolean Tennis Association has over 5400 registered members in 78 clubs. 400 teams took part in the various championships this year and played over 1200 matches. Weißensteiner is proud of the five international tournaments that are held in South Tyrol: the ATP Challenger in St. Ulrich, the two $25.000 ITF Futures in Bolzano and Rungg, the new $15.000 tournament in St. Christina and the women's ITF tournament in Ortisei.

All 2018 state champions were then honored. In the open category, Stefan Knapp, Karin's brother, confirmed his national championship title from last year, while Greta Zwerger from Brixen won in the women's category. In the youth team championships, TC Rungg won five of the seven titles awarded. The U14 girls from the Überetsch club also won bronze at the Italian Championships in Forlì. Medal, which the Over 45 men's team from the TC Municipality of Bozen (limited 4:3) narrowly missed out on at the national final in Sanremo and came fourth.
