Karin Knapp called up for the Fed Cup final in Cagliari

Barazzutti has nominated Sara Errani (WTA 7), Roberta Vinci (WTA 13), Flavia Penetta (WTA 31) and Karin Knapp (WTA 41) for the Fed Cup final in Cagliari. Russia's captain Shamil Tarpishev, on the other hand, has chosen Alisa Kleybanova (WTA 186), Alexandra Panova (WTA 138), and the two after the cancellations of Elena Vesnina, Maria Kirilenko and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (they are taking part in the Tournament of Champions in Sofia). Italy and Russia will face each other in the Fed Cup for the seventh time. The Russians lead the direct duels with 5-1 wins. While the Russians won the encounters in 2011, 2007, 2005, 1980 and 1968, the “Azzurre” were victorious in April 2009 in Castellaneta Marina.

For the Italians, it is the fifth Fed Cup final in eight years. Of their last four finals, they have only lost the one against Russia in 2007, while they won the title in 2006, 2009 and 2010.

Third call-up for Karin Knapp

Karin Knapp made her Fed Cup debut as a 20-year-old in April 2008 against Ukraine. The Ahrntal native was number 35 in the world at the time and one of the great hopes of Italian tennis. She narrowly lost her singles against Alona Bondarenko 3:6, 3:6 and also lost in the doubles with Sara Errani against Maria Koryzeva/Tatjana Perebiynis 6:0, 6:7, 3:6. Nevertheless, Italy won 3-2 and advanced to the semi-finals. But without Karin Knapp. The Luttacher had to struggle with her knee injury and the well-known heart problem. So she fell back to number 600 in the world rankings.

In February, the Luttacher returned to the national team after five years, where she replaced the ailing Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone with debutant Nastassja Burnett. In the first round of the Fed Cup World Group between Italy and the USA, Karin Knapp did not play, but had to watch the match from the stands as a reserve player. Now she has been called up to the Fed Cup team for the third time.

The 26-year-old from Ahrntal has had an impressive season. By reaching the quarter-finals in Luxembourg last week, she made another leap in the world rankings and improved from 70th to 48st place with 41 points within a week. Knapp is the fourth best tennis player in Italy behind Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci and Flavia Penneta.

Karin Knapp called up for the Fed Cup final in Cagliari

On Wednesday, Italy's captain Corrado Barazzutti announced the names of the tennis players who will represent Italy at the Fed Cup final in Cagliari on the first weekend of November (November 2nd and 3rd). Karin Knapp from Ahrntal was also nominated, taking Francesca Schiavone's place.
