Karin Knapp before the Fed Cup final: “A great honor”

For Karin Knapp it is already the second final round of the women's team competition. “I was also part of the team as the fifth player at the final in Moscow in 2007. “But this time it’s something completely different,” Karin Knapp is quoted as saying on the website of the Italian tennis association FIT.

For the 26-year-old tennis player from Luttach, it is the third call-up to the Fed Cup team. She made her debut as a 20-year-old in April 2008 against Ukraine and in February of this year she was a substitute in the first round duel between Italy and the USA. Being part of the Fed Cup team was one of her goals. “Training with Sara, Roberta and Flavia is a great honor. “They are very strong players who are writing Italian tennis history and have already won the Fed Cup three times,” says the Ahrntal native happily.

Karin Knapp has had an impressive season. For the first time in her career, she played in all four Grand Slam tournaments and the results were impressive. At Wimbledon she made it to the semi-finals, while at the US Open she made it into the third round for the first time. Results that, together with the two semi-finals in Bogotà and Gastein, allowed them to reach 41st place in the world rankings.

In February 2008, the 26-year-old South Tyrolean achieved her best position in the world rankings with 35th place, but then she had to struggle with various injuries and fell far behind. “I always wanted to return to a high level. I pursued this goal with all my strength. I started in the $10.000 tournaments and would like to thank my two coaches, the Francesco siblings, one of whom is also my friend, and Alessandro Piccari. I trained with them in Anzio. I slipped back to 600th place in the world rankings and it was hard, very hard. Without them I would never have been able to get this far forward again. Now I can do whatever I like, and that alone is a dream,” concluded Knapp.
