No historic title: Williams fails in the semi-finals

4 years after her last Grand Slam title, Williams once again missed the chance to achieve the historic record she longed for. The long-time tennis world number 1. failed in the semi-finals of the Australian Open due to the fantastic Japanese Naomi Osaka. The 39-year-old American had to admit defeat to the number 3 seed 3:6, 4:6. After just 75 minutes of play, the 2019 Melbourne winner and 2018 and 2020 US Open winner used her first match point.

In the final on Saturday, Osaka will face Jennifer Brady from the USA. The 25-year-old prevailed in the second semi-final against the Czech Karolina Muchova after three hard-fought sets with 2:3, 6:4, 3:6. For Brady, who is seeded at number 6 in Melbourne, it is her first appearance in a Grand Slam final. After the semi-final exit, the visibly disappointed Williams broke off her press conference after a few minutes in tears. When asked whether she had already said goodbye to the spectators as she walked out of the Rod Laver Arena and whether this might have been her last appearance at the Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne, the 39-year-old replied with a smile: “Me Do not know. If I say farewell at some point, I wouldn't tell anyone. So ..."

When she was asked about her many minor mistakes and whether it was simply a bad day, the 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner said: “I don’t know. That's it." Williams began to cry, stood up and left the interview room.
