State Championship: Tennis Meran wins both Open titles

As has been usual for years, the national championship games were played on the clay courts of TC Bozen. Around 200 participants took part in six categories. Defending champion Horst Rieder was not there in the Open category, but the favorite lived up to his role: 26-year-old Lukas Holzner from TC Meran first eliminated Erwin Tröbinger from Val Gardena in three sets in the quarter-finals, then eliminated his brother Mirko Holzner in the semi-finals with 6:4, 6:4 and didn't let Michael Kerschbaumer from Brixen, who competes for the tennis club St. Christina/Wolkenstein, take away his victory in the final, won with 6:3, 6:2 and crowned himself national champion for the first time in his career. Kerschbaumer, on the other hand, suffered a final defeat for the second time in a row. Last year Rieder slowed him down, this time Holzner had the upper hand after Kerschbaumer had thrown the young Sebastian Brzezinski (TC Rungg) out of the competition in the quarter-finals and Gianluca Gatto (TC Gemeinde Bozen) in the semi-finals.

14-year-old Marion Viertler triumphs in the women's category In the women's field, the first surprises came in the quarter-finals when Jeannine Hopfgartner and Silvia Saccani (ASV St. Georgen), who were number one and number two, were thrown out of the tournament against all expectations. Hopfgartner, national champion in 2014 and runner-up last year, lost out to Marion Viertler from TC Meran, while Saccani was beaten by Elisa Crazzolara (TC Kaltern). Viertler and Crazzolara made it to the final in the semi-finals against Greta Zweger from Brixen and Teresa Schwienbacher from Meran, respectively. In the final, Viertler presented herself very confidently and won 6:1, 4:6, 6:1, which means that after the title in the 3rd category from the previous year, she now also has a national championship title in the Open class.

Mairhofer and Pesarin are at the top in the 3rd category The new national champion in the third category is Sylvia Mairhofer from TC Gemeinde Bozen, who prevailed in the final against 16-year-old Marion Wenter (TC Ritten) 6:2, 6:2. With the same result, Mathis Pesarin won the men's final against Markus Sanoll. Pesarin was crowned national champion two years ago, but last year he failed in the semi-finals. In the fourth category, Armin Mayr ended up at the top. In the final he had the upper hand against defending champion Lorenz Röggl. Both players are no strangers to South Tyrol's sports world: While Mayr is a well-known footballer and played in the league championship with Eppan last year, Röggl is part of the squad of the Eppan ice hockey club, which played in Serie B last season. In the final, the soccer player won the duel with a clear 6:1, 6:1. Waltraud Kirchler from Bruneck is the new national champion for women. She beat Hilde Niederstätter 3:6, 6:3, 6:2 in the final.
