Laura Mair’s greatest success to date: “That was unexpected”

Laura Mair has had turbulent days behind her. Just 10 days ago in Kottingbrunn, Austria, she reached the quarterfinals of an ITF tournament worth $15.000 for the first time in her career. A few days later, this record was history again. Last week the 19-year-old from Wolkenstein reached the final of an ITF tournament for the first time. Mair, who is in position 1110 in the WTA ranking, lost this against Federica Bilardo, who is ranked 461 positions higher, in two sets 2:6, 1:6. But the talented tennis player is definitely heading in the right direction. “The tournament in Kottingbrunn gave me a lot of security and self-confidence,” explains Mair SportNews . “Still, I never expected to make it to the final in Padua. From qualifying to the final it was a total of eight matches, so I didn’t think I could get this far.” An arduous path to the final Mair, who is also in the modeling business, On her way to the final, she almost exclusively eliminated players who were ranked higher than her. The matches were competitive and all lasted three sets, which took away from the substance. “After the semi-final I felt that I was tired. I knew it would be a difficult final, so I decided to just do my best. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough in the end.” Now Laura Mair wants to take this positive momentum with her and attack at the next tournaments. We're heading to Bad Waltersdorf, Austria, on Tuesday. "I'll probably play two ITF tournaments, then I'll go to Trieste, where there's a $25.000 tournament coming up."
