Masters in Madrid: Seppi meets a top 20 player at the start

The 35-year-old from Kalter, who has just slipped into the main draw, will face the Frenchman Gael Monfils (ATP 18) at the start.

Seppi, currently number 68 in the world, has already played against the 32-year-old from Paris seven times in his career. With 5:2 victories, the record speaks clearly for Monfils, who also won the last duel against Seppi this year in Rotterdam with 4:6, 6:1, 6:3. The South Tyrolean, however, was able to defeat Monfils in Metz in 2012 and in Halle three years later. Monfils, who was number 2016 in the world in 6, is having a very strong season. In addition to the title in Rotterdam, he reached the semi-finals in both Sofia and Dubai. This week, however, Monfils was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Spanish qualifier Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets at the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril.

Seppi's 8th participation in Madrid In his last participation in Madrid two seasons ago, Seppi failed in the second qualifying round against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Overall, the Überetscher is taking part in the tournament in Spain's capital for the eighth time this year. He achieved his best result exactly ten years ago when he got stuck in the round of 16 against Serbian Novak Djokovic.

In Madrid, Seppi is hoping to celebrate his first clay court victory of the season, having already been eliminated in round one in Monte Carlo against Lorenzo Sonego, in Budapest against Filip Krajinovic and in Munich against Philipp Kohlschreiber.

After Madrid, Seppi will also take part in the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, where he received a wild card for the main draw from the Italian Tennis Federation.
