Medvedev praises Sinner: “Only champions do that”

Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev secured the first men's semifinal at the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. The protagonists themselves say this in advance.

Australian Open winner Sinner, currently number 3 in the tennis world, defeated the Czech Tomas Machac after 91 minutes with 6:4,6:2. The 22-year-old from Puster will meet the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the “dream semi-final”, who eliminated the Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6:2,7:6(7). SportNews berichtete).

This will not only be a repeat of the final in Melbourne, but also perhaps the best final to date in Vienna last October (both went to Sinner). “It will probably be a tactical match,” predicted Sinner. “It will be an interesting test for me,” said the South Tyrolean after his 20th victory this year. He is still missing two successes for his third title of the season after Melbourne and Rotterdam. His only defeat came in the Indian Wells semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz.

“Even if Jannik has problems in some matches – he finds solutions.” Medvedev about Sinner

Medvedev is the defending champion in Miami and he appears to be in shape for a repeat. In any case, he didn't drop a set until the semi-finals. But Medvedev is warned about Sinner. “He’s playing better and better. He has self-confidence. Even if I watch him on TV and he has problems in some matches - he finds solutions and only champions do that.”

Surprise among women

The second semi-final will be determined on (today) Thursday. The top seed Carlos Alcaraz meets Grigor Dimitrow (BUL-11), Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (GER-4) meets Fabian Marozsan (HUN).

There is a surprise semi-final for the women at the same venue: Danielle Collins meets the Russian Yekaterina Alexandrova. The 30-year-old American and 2022 Australian Open finalist defeated Caroline Garcia (FRA-23) 6:3,6:2. Collins, who is giving up her career at the end of the season, will not meet her compatriot Jessica Pegula, who is number 5. Because Alexandrova continued her run after defeating the top seeded Pole Iga Swiatek with a 3:6,6:4,6:4 over Pegula.
