Mega comeback: Sinner does it like Murray

Sinner and Fucsovics had met three times so far - twice in a Grand Slam. The Hungarian retained the upper hand in both matches. A circumstance that Sinner absolutely wanted to change. In view of the performances shown so far, this seemed quite possible: the 21-year-old had easily won his two games, while Fucsovics had to go to the fourth set once and the fifth set once. However, there was no sign of much difference at Margaret Court Arena that day. For a long time, the Eastern European was the player who played better, performed more cleverly and was on the winning track. But Sinner showed his well-known virtues, stuck with it, waited for his opponent to let up and turned it up himself. The result: 4:6, 4:6, 6:1, 6:2 and 6:0. It was the first time that Sinner turned a 0-2 set deficit in his favor.

It became clear in the opening minutes that Sinner wasn't having his best day in the second largest arena in Melbourne Park: he started with a double fault, conceded the break at the first attempt and struggled with the precision of his groundstrokes. The forehand in particular was extremely stuck. In the first set alone he made ten errors on this side. And so it happened that Fucsovics, who immediately gave up the break lead but later regained it, won the first set 6:4 without too many problems.

Things don't look good for long The Hungarian, for his part, didn't perform flawlessly, but he had come up with a tactic that drove Sinner crazy. He repeatedly countered the hard groundstrokes with slices that Sinner had absolutely no idea what to do with. The consequence was many avoidable mistakes because the South Tyrolean overpowered. At the same time, Fucsovics always took command when Sinner threw in (too) short balls. The spectators did not see any change in this picture in the second set either: Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi's protégé converted a 1:3 deficit into a 4:3 lead, but subsequently conceded the next break, that decided the passage.

Now the Sesto native had his back to the wall. But he didn't think about giving up - that's not an option for him. Instead, Sinner tried to look for solutions to somehow turn things around. That succeeded. The third game of the third set proved to be the key, when South Tyrol's athlete of the year fended off a break chance and moved ahead 3-0. He then played with significantly greater confidence as he had in the first two rounds. Fucsovics couldn't do anything to counter this - Sinner made short work of it 6-1.

Now against Tsitsipas The world number 78. then took a long break. One that briefly bore the desired fruit. Fucsovics broke right at the start - also thanks to an extremely lucky net roller. But Sinner didn't let up, reacted immediately and took the lead 4-2. Now the groundstrokes were running smoothly and the balls were literally flying around the ears of the tired Fucsovics. Sinner won twelve games (!) in a row and gave his opponent the maximum penalty in the final set with a score of 6-0. After three and a half hours, Sinner smiled with relief in his box. In the round of 4 he will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 64), who clearly beat Tallon Griekspoor (ATP XNUMX).

Andy Murray made up for a 0-2 set deficit at the Australian Open on Thursday and won an epic duel against Thanasi Kokkinakis after almost six hours of play (!). Jannik Sinner was obviously inspired by this, because the next day the South Tyrolean achieved the same feat.
