Full steam ahead into the semi-finals: The old Sinner is back

He has been frequently criticized in recent weeks. Many people resented his cancellation of the Olympics, which was accompanied by a dip in form - and there it was, the first real crisis in Jannik Sinner's career. But he now seems to have overcome this in a hurry: Sinner is currently playing big at the $1,8 million tournament in Washington and is in the semi-finals after his 6:4, 6:2 victory over Steve Johnson (ATP 81). There the 19-year-old will meet US boy and surprise man Jenson Brooksby (ATP 130) on Saturday.

Two set win at the start against Emil Ruusuvuori , two-set win in Round of 16 against Sebastian Korda and now also a two-set win in the quarter-finals: Jannik Sinner presents his best side in Washington. The lightness, the relaxedness that has been missing over the last few weeks is back. And when it comes to play, Sinner is back to his old self: he doesn't shy away from taking risks, stays cool even in the (few) difficult moments, delights the audience with some spectacular balls and serves fantastically. In short: The soon-to-be 20-year-old is having a lot of fun. A brilliant second sentence Sinner was immediately wide awake against Johnson, but the American was able to stand up to him to some extent in the first set. Sinner still got the first break and moved away to 4:2. After that, the South Tyrolean only wobbled briefly and had to fend off a break chance. He won the set shortly afterwards.

In the second section, Sinner initially stumbled and gave his opponent two break opportunities, but the Sexten player ruined them with his coolness. What Sinner showed afterwards was great tennis. The South Tyrolean professional played practically flawlessly, barely gave up a point and only needed 31 minutes to close the set. The move into the semi-finals was perfect after a total of one and a half hours of play. A very interesting semi-final awaits Sinner is the favorite there. However, his opponent Brooksby, a great young hope in the USA, should not be underestimated. The 20-year-old has already eliminated Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 15) and Frances Tiafoe (ATP 50) in Washington. Like Sinner, Brooksby hasn't uttered a single sentence yet. A very interesting match awaits between the two youngsters on Saturday.
