Who knows how far Jannik Sinner would have gotten at this year's US Open? An injury wouldn't have thwarted the Sesto native's plans. In any case, experts had a lot of confidence in the 19-year-old, especially since the draw would have spoken in his favor after he had survived the first round. But this is just pure speculation – that much is certain. Back causes all problems As Sinner's physiotherapist Claudio Zimaglia now announced, a back contracture was the origin of all the problems. “It led to a change in posture, which in turn was the trigger for the permanent cramps in the thigh,” Zimaglia explained to the Sports Gazette.

The pain was so severe that Sinner asked his team around trainer Andrea Volpini, who was there in New York on behalf of Riccardo Piatti, several times for permission to forfeit. Without success: Sinner should continue playing “to gain important experience and learn to deal with pain.” In addition, there was no risk of sustaining a serious injury, according to the team’s tenor. The South Tyrolean's fighting spirit almost paid off, as he only lost in the tiebreak of the fifth set.

This type of injury is not new for Sinner. “A similar thing happened to me last year in Umag, but the pain was much smaller back then,” says the world number 74, who “needs to take a few days off to fully recover.”

The next tournament in the youngster's program is the one in Kitzbühel (September 8th to 13th), for which he received a wildcard from the organizers. It is not yet clear whether Sinner will actually open in Tyrol. First he returns to Bordighiera to review his North American tour with Coach Piatti.
