After marathon match: Seppi loses to Wawrinka

Seppi, who is currently ranked 85th in the world, played a passionate game against world number 15 Stan Wawrinka. It was always a match of equals. Only after a long fight, a total of 3.38 hours of play and 5 sets, Seppi had to admit defeat 2:3 (6:4, 5:7, 3:6, 6:3, 4:6).

First things first: Seppi had a hard time at the beginning and lost his serve in the second game of the first set. Wawrinka took a 1-2 lead. Then Seppi hit back, got to 3:0 after a close game, then took serve from the Swiss and equalized. The Swiss favorite then played his serve just like Seppi. When the score was 1:3 in the first set, Seppi managed another break. When the score was 4:4, the Kalterer player converted the first set point.

In the second set, both tennis aces carried through their serves until game 2, when Seppi managed the break. In the following game, however, Wawrinka did the same and equalized with a re-break to make it 9:5. The 5:6 for the Swiss was followed by a lost service game by Seppi and thus the favorite won the set (5:7) and was able to equalize.

The 3rd set was also balanced from the start. When Seppi served, Wawrinka moved ahead to 4:2. The Swiss played his own serve game without losing a point and took the lead 5-2. Seppi came back to 3:5, but was no longer able to turn the set around.

In the 4th set, the Kalterer hit back impressively. Seppi was already 4:3 ahead when he managed a break and moved ahead to 5:3. The 35-year-old Kalterer played his own serve and won the set. Wawrinka converts 1st match point The all-important 5th set was hotly contested until the end. When the score was 3:3, Seppi took the favorite's serve and took the lead 4:3. In the next game, however, Wawrinka managed the re-break to equalize. Wawrinka delivered his serve to make it 5:4. When Seppi served, the Swiss took the lead 40:15 and converted the first match point.

79.347 euros in prize money and 45 ATP points Despite this defeat, Andreas Seppi can console himself with 79.347 euros in prize money and 45 ATP points. In the world rankings, the Kalterer, who had to defend 90 points from last year, is now likely to slip by around 10 positions.

For Seppi, the Australian Open is over. On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday he was already eliminated from the doubles match with his partner Lorenzo Sonego.

Seppi is now returning to the USA, where he will take part in the ATP tournaments in New York (February 10th to 16th) and Delray Beach (February 17th to 23rd) in February.

At the beginning of March, Seppi becomes a father for the first time, during this break he gets the usual injection in the hip and then prepares for the clay court season in April.
