After defeating Thiem: Djokovic in the Madrid final

The world number one from Serbia, who has won the last three Grand Slam tournaments, reached his second final of the season at the clay court Masters in Madrid. In the semifinals, Djokovic (31) beat the recently outstanding Austrian Dominic Thiem 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (7:4).

On Sunday, Djokovic will play against either his long-term Spanish rival Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) for his third title in Madrid after 2011 and 2016. Clay court king Nadal is still waiting for his first tournament victory this year.

After his triumph at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Djokovic was surprisingly eliminated early from the Masters in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo. In Madrid he benefited from the rejection of Croatian Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals, while Thiem had to fight against Roger Federer (Switzerland) for three sets.

The day break paid off, especially in crucial situations. While Djokovic used all three break points, Thiem needed ten chances to take his opponent's serve three times. Djokovic was superior in each of the tiebreaks, and after 2:22 hours he converted his first match point for his sixth win in his eighth duel with Thiem.
