Next victory: Sinner is about to enter the main draw in Rome

After fending off a match point in the second set, the 17-year-old from Sesto prevailed against his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti of the same age 2.39:6(7), 5:7(6), 6:6 after 3 hours of play.

The South Tyrolean is now in the final, where he will face Andrea Basso on Thursday. The winner of the pre-qualification will receive a wild card for the main field of the “Internazionali d“Italia”, which will take place from May 11th to 19th in the Foro Italico in Rome. The finalist could also make it into the main draw if Andreas Seppi moves straight into the main draw. Otherwise, the loser has to play in the qualification on Saturday.

After his victories against Luca Tomasetto and Riccardo Balzerani, Sinner, who was seeded number 2 in the pre-qualification, met Musetti in the Youngstar top game. The 17-year-old from Pusteria is currently the best U18 player in the ATP rankings, while Musetti from Carrara, who is seven months younger, won this year's Junior Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

The game was very even from the start. From Sinner's point of view, both players took the service once until the score was 5:4. In the tenth game, the South Tyrolean had the chance to make it 6:4, but missed a set point. Musetti equalized to 5:5 and secured the tiebreak 7:5 a little later.

Sinner fends off match point In the second half of the game, Sinner managed the break to make it 4:3 in the seventh game, but in return he immediately received the rebreak. In the tenth game, the South Tyrolean even had to fend off a match point before making it 5:5. Immediately afterwards it was Sinner who took the serve from Musetti to make it 6:5. Sinner lost his serve again, so this set also went into a tiebreak. The Sesto native was already 3-0 ahead, Musetti then won five games in a row to take the lead 5-3. Sinner didn't give up and missed another set point at 6:5 before converting his third to make it 8:6.

In the decisive third set, Sinner once again had the better end. The Pusterer took the service from Musetti when the score was 4:3 and used his fourth match point after 2:39 hours to make the final score 6:3. For this victory, Sinner received an impressive 18.955 euros in prize money. “It was a very difficult, nervous game at the beginning, with a lot of mistakes on both sides. But then we improved. I really want to win against Basso tomorrow. We trained together a few times, but I hardly know him,” said Sinner after his win against Musetti.
