Naomi Osaka wins the US Open for the second time

Former world number one Naomi Osaka won the US Open for the second time after 2018 and celebrated her third Grand Slam title. The 23-year-old tennis player from Japan won the final against Victoria Asarenka from Belarus, eight years her senior, 1:6, 6:3, 6:3 in New York on Saturday. “It was a tough match for me. At some point I thought it would be embarrassing if I lost in less than an hour,” said Osaka at the award ceremony after lying on her back immediately after match point.

For Osaka, it was the third title at one of the four most important tournaments after the US Open 2018 and the Australian Open 2019. Asarenka won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 and was in a Grand Slam final for the first time in seven years. Osaka initially didn't make it to the final level. She received three breaks in the first round. She made 13 slight errors and only managed 5 winning strokes - against an opponent who performed almost perfectly. In the second round, Osaka also fell behind 0-2, but then she got over her obvious nervousness and moved much better.

With a significant increase in performance, she managed to equalize the sentence. For the first time since 2016, when Angelique Kerber from Kiel won against Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, a women's final at the US Open went into a third set. Osaka now played consistently and used her second match point to win after 1:53 hours.
