Nerves of steel: Sinner in the quarter-finals of Monte Carlo

Sinner (ATP 8) and Hurkacz (ATP 13) fought a real marathon match on Thursday around lunchtime on the Rainier III court. Ultimately, after 2:28 hours of play, Sinner had the upper hand with 3:6, 7:6(6) and 6:1. In the direct duel against his good friend he makes it 2:2. Sinner will now play in the quarter-finals on Friday Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 21), who surprisingly eliminated world number one Novak Djokovic on Thursday evening.

The round of 16 game against Hurkacz didn't start well for Sinner. After he missed two break points in Hurkacz's first service game, the Pole then took the service away from him. As a result, the serving giant left no stone unturned and won the first round.

Sinner fends off match point In the second set, Sinner fell behind again - 1:2. Because Sinner then managed the rebreak, it ended up going to a tiebreak. In the meantime, the South Tyrolean even missed a set point when the score was 6:5. The tiebreak was then fiercely contested: Sinner successfully fended off a match point – after 22 rallies. He then turned the tables and won the second set with 8:6 points.

In the third round, Sinner got off to an optimal start for the first time. Hurkacz was no longer able to break Sinner's rhythm. Now the Sexten player set the tone in the rallies and repeatedly pushed Hurkacz onto the defensive. After Sinner took the lead 4-1, the game was finally decided. Sinner showed his full class in the third set and is therefore deservedly in the quarter-finals. The match point fended off once again underlines his nerves. The audience also got Sinner on his side - at least from this moment onwards.

Jannik Sinner made it into the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. The South Tyrolean put in a real show of strength against Hubert Hurkacz.
