Not a chance: Sinner is thrown out

Jannik Sinner (ATP 12) played the last match of the evening on Thursday evening (local time) on Center Court. A defeat that came about for two reasons: on the one hand, Sinner didn't have much going for him on the slow hard court in Canada's metropolis, and on the other hand, his counterpart Pablo Carreño Busta once again played really well.

The Spaniard is surprisingly in great form in Montreal. In the first two rounds, the 31-year-old, who is ranked 23rd in the world, eliminated two top people, Matteo Berrettini (ATP 14) and Holger Rune (ATP 26), in two sets each. For Berrettini he needed 78 minutes and for Rune only 58 minutes. Now Sinner also had to accept the Iberian's dominance without envy.

For the South Tyrolean, the match in Montreal was not a good one from the start. He had to give up his serve in the third game. In addition, the 20-year-old from Pusteria made too many mistakes, 15 in the first set alone, 12 of which were with his forehand. Only 33 percent of his first serves went into the field. Little changed in the course of the game in the second half. Although Sinner got his service under better control, his timing from the baseline was still lacking and he continued to make a lot of unforced errors. So there was no match for someone like Carreño Busta. He didn't allow a single break point in the entire match and even took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself in the fifth game. In front of NHL star Jonathan Huberdeau - who recently signed an eight-year contract with the Calgary Flames - Carreño Busta converted his first match point after 1.24:6 hours to make it 4:XNUMX.

The death of favorites in Montreal continues. In addition to Sinner, Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev have also said goodbye early. Carreño Busta will face British qualifier Jack Draper in the quarterfinals.
