Now it's official: Sinner is going to Tokyo

The international tennis federation ITF announced the field of participants on Thursday. Accordingly, all athletes who were ranked within the top 56 in the world rankings this Monday are allowed to go to Tokyo - although only four athletes per nation are allowed. Matteo Berrettini (ATP 9), Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 26), Fabio Fognini (ATP 29) and Jannik Sinner qualified for Italy. The man from Sexten, currently 23rd in the world rankings, is benefiting from the postponement of the games, as his ranking last summer would not have been enough.

In addition to the 56 tennis aces who slide straight into the main draw, the ITF is handing out eight wild cards. These go to players who come from a country that is not represented in the top 56, making a main field of 64 athletes. Camila Giorgi (ATP 76) benefits from this regulation. She is the only representative of the successful Italian tennis women in Tokyo.

From July 24th to August 1st there will be hard court play at the Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo. The defending champions are Britain's Andy Murray (he also won the gold medal in London in 2012) in the men's event and Monica Puig from Puerto Rico in the women's event. However, the latter will not be able to defend her title due to injury.
