Thrilling semi-final fight: Thiem wrestles Zverev

Thiem defeated the German Alexander Zverev after 3:42 hours with 3:6,6:4,7:6(3),7:6(4) and will play against defending champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia, No. 2) for his title on Sunday first Grand Slam title. For Thiem, it is his third final at one of the four major tournaments after the French Open in 2018 and 2019. He is now already close to the top 3, in the “live ranking” he is only 85 points behind third-placed Roger Federer (SUI). If he wins the title on Sunday, Thiem will crack the top 3 for the first time in third place. Thiem will now be guaranteed prize money of 1,27 million euros (gross) and 1.200 ATP points.

If he beats Djokovic, Thiem would be only the second Austrian after Thomas Muster (French Open 1995) to triumph in singles at one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He has a 4:6 head-to-head record against Djokovic, but has narrowly won twice recently (French Open semi-finals and ATP Finals in 2019).

The now three-time major finalist, who also reached the final at the ATP Finals in London last November, was very happy. “I'm overjoyed, of course. The game was on a knife edge from the start. I think we both started off a bit nervous – obviously both in the first semi-final here anyway,” explained Thiem in the ServusTV interview.
