Richard Weißensteiner new South Tyrolean tennis president

Weißensteiner was very successful as a sports official for the winter sports association for 15 years. In 1996 he was elected to the South Tyrolean FISI committee for the first time, and from 2000 to 2006 he led the association as president. When Weißensteiner took over the South Tyrolean winter sports association, he was severely hit financially because all contributions from Milan had been canceled shortly before. During his six years as chairman, he restructured the association and made it one of the strongest in the country. In 2007, Weißensteiner moved to the national FISI in Milan and held the office of vice president there until a year ago. In June 2012 he was awarded the honorary presidency of the South Tyrolean Winter Sports Association.

Now he is switching to tennis. “I have always been passionate about this sport. In 1983 I was already head of the tennis section at SC Eggen, then district representative at VSS for three years. I still take part in the Masters category championships as an active player. Now I would like to make a difference in the association too,” promises Weißensteiner.

His election is considered a certainty because Weißensteiner is the only candidate for the presidency after Bolzano's deputy mayor Klaus Ladinser withdrew. The new committee will be reduced to six members. Paul Troger from Niederdorf and Wolfgang Wanker from Val Gardena are hanging on for another four years, while new additions include Paolo Fellin, Cornelia Gartner, Marlon Brando and Georg Ennemoser. They replace the old committee members Alex Vorhauser, Roland Eisendle, Dietmar Pfeifer and Helmuth Oberhauser.

Weißensteiner is aiming for more intensive cooperation with clubs and tennis schools in the future. In South Tyrol, around 4500 people are currently registered with the regional association, representing 80 clubs. The aim is to accompany and support local talents on their way to an international career. “We therefore have to organize more international tournaments and present our sport better in the media and in reporting,” says Weißensteiner. Cooperation with the national association must also be expanded. “In Roland Sandrin we have a very capable man there who enjoys a great reputation and can certainly help us.”

The election of the new regional association will take place on Saturday, November 10th, at 14 p.m. in the Runggaditsch fire station in Ortisei.
