French Open: Sinner scores big against Lean

Sinner's engine maintained the ideal speed for almost two and a half hours in a humid 28 degrees on the Court Simonne Mathieu in Roland Garros and could not be kept in check by the Italian clay court specialist Mager (ATP number 87). Sinner won 6:1, 7:5, 3:6, 6:3.

The first meeting between the South Tyrolean and the Ligurian only developed into an interesting showdown as the game continued; Sinner's performance in the first set was worth considering. Mager was never able to keep up with Pusterer's pace in this phase and quickly lost the first round with a score of 1:6.

After that, however, the outsider caught himself - also because Sinner now gave him a lot more freedom and didn't act nearly as flawlessly as he had at the beginning of the game. With the score at 5:5, the 19-year-old from Sesto had to fend off two break points in order to then move to 6:5 in the following game when the opponent served. This paved the way for him to win the set.

However, it was already clear then: the duel with Mager would be anything but a sure-fire success for Sinner. Because the longer the match lasted, the more confidently and powerfully Mager hit the balls into Sinner's half of the court. With his first break, Mager pulled away to 4:2 in the third set, followed a little later by 6:3. Now Sinner was really challenged – and he reacted impressively.

The South Tyrolean, seeded number 18, played as powerfully in the fourth set as he had at the beginning of the match and hardly allowed his opponent to develop. This took the edge off of Mager, who had just tasted blood. Only when the score was 0:2 was he able to briefly create tension with a break, but the following rebreak from Sinner was already decisive in the game. As a result, the favorite no longer allowed the butter to be removed from bread. Now the youngster duel awaits In the third round, Sinner will now face 22-year-old Swede Mikael Ymer (ATP 105), who surprisingly defeated local French hero Gael Monfils in four sets. Sinner and Ymer have never faced each other on sand, each was able to defeat the other once on hard ground. Last year, Ymer clearly won in two sets at the ATP tournament in Montpellier, and in 2019 Sinner had little trouble at the Next Gen Finals.

Incidentally, on Thursday afternoon Italy's second exceptional talent, Lorenzo Musetti, also bought the third round ticket. He clearly defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in three sets. Andreas Seppi, however, was eliminated in the second round against Soonwoo Kwon ( SportNews berichtete ).
