Sensation! Marion Viertler wins ITF tournament in Cairo

A huge success for the TC Meran player in her young career. Viertler only played in Cairo in the third ITF tournament ever, having been eliminated in the first qualifying round in Ortisei in 3 and last year. The Vinschgerin player improved from game to game and celebrated 2016 wins this week.

After qualifying, Viertler took on the Swiss Nadine Keller (WTA 1156), the number 8 seed Russian Sofia Dmitrieva (WTA 1113), the number 4 Lexie Stevens (WTA 693) from the Netherlands and, on Saturday, the Spanish Carlota Martinez of the same age Cirez (WTA 1228).

On Sunday, Viertler also dominated the final against the Egyptian host Lamis Alhussein Abdel Aziz (WTA 780), number 6 on the seeding list. In the first set, the player from Silandro promptly pulled away to 1-3 and won 1-6 a short time later. In the second half of the game, Viertler was already behind 1:2, but then won 2 games in a row to make the final score 4:4. An incredible week for Viertler, who wins the title in her first ITF final.

For comparison: Verena Meliss from Kaltern and Verena Hofer from Val Gardena were once or never in an ITF final. Meliss is still waiting for her first title. With this success, Viertler also received 1 WTA points. The Vinschger native will thus move into the top 10 in the world rankings and is now South Tyrol's second best tennis player behind Meliss (WTA 1050).

“I am overjoyed with my first tournament victory. Unfortunately I can't celebrate for long because I have to play the qualifiers again on Sunday afternoon. But I feel good and hope to have another good week,” said Viertler happily.
