Seppi with a lot of effort in the round of 16

The 33-year-old from Kalter prevailed in the first round against the German Maximilian Marterer (ATP 95) in three sets with 3:6, 6:3, 7:6(9). In the decisive tiebreak, Seppi even had to fend off a match point.

Seppi completely missed the start of the match and was immediately behind 1:4. Marterer served strongly, didn't allow a break chance and only gave up five points on his own service. After just 24 minutes, the 22-year-old Bavarian won the first set 6:3.

In the second half of the game, Seppi found his way into the game better. With the score at 3:2, the “Azzurro” managed the only break of the set. The world number 87 then managed to take the lead and, like Marterer before him, secured the set with 6:3 points. Above all, the 83% of points won on Seppi's own serve made the difference in this set.

The third period was very even until the score was 3:3. In the seventh game, Kalterer Martiner took the serve to take the lead 4:3. Two games later, Seppi had a great chance to win the match on his own serve, but the German countered with the rebreak to make it 5:5. After both players played through their games, the match had to be decided in a tiebreak. This couldn't have been more exciting. At 6:5, Seppi initially missed a match point before he even had to fend off a match point from his opponent at 6:7. Immediately afterwards it was Seppi who was able to assert himself in this hard-fought match with 2:04 after 9:7 hours of play.

An important victory for Seppi, who will face the winner of the match between the two qualifiers Nathan Pasha (USA) and Thomas Fancutt (Australia) in the round of 16.
