Tennis star Serena Williams: “Almost died after my daughter was born”

"I almost died after the birth of my daughter," wrote Williams (36) in a guest article for the US broadcaster CNN: "After the birth there were six days full of uncertainty."

According to Serena Willams, Alexis Olympia Jr. was born via emergency cesarean section. “Because her heart rate dropped dramatically during contractions,” said the American, who recently celebrated her comeback on the tennis court in the Fed Cup. This operation went smoothly, but the young mother's condition deteriorated dramatically afterwards.

Scary moments Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism that led to severe coughing attacks. This caused the freshly stitched cesarean section wound to open. She was then operated on again. The doctors found "a large blood clot in my abdominal cavity," Williams explained: "And then I had to go back to the operating room for another procedure that prevented the clot from getting into my lungs. When I finally went home to my family "I had to spend the first six weeks of being a mother in bed."

Today she is healthy and grateful to the medical team. "They knew exactly how to act in such a situation," said Williams: "If I hadn't had such professional care, I wouldn't be here today."

Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam tournaments, wants to return to the tour later this year. In the Fed Cup she lost in doubles against the Netherlands alongside her sister Venus on February 11th. In January 2017, she won her 23rd major title at the Australian Open - at the time, Williams was already eight weeks pregnant.
