Victory against Federer: Zverev in the semi-finals in Shanghai

The 22-year-old from Hamburg defeated the Swiss 6:3, 6:7 (7:9), 6:3 and celebrated his first victory of the year over a top 10 player at the fifth attempt. Zverev's opponents for a place in the final will be Matteo Berrettini (Italy) and Dominic Thiem (Austria).

Zverev didn't let himself be deterred by a brief flutter of nerves in the second set - when the score was 6:5, he missed three match points on his own serve, and in the tiebreak there were two more unused chances to win the match. Otherwise, he could rely on his renewed service against the 38-year-old Federer. He scored 17 aces against his idol with only one double fault, and after 2:04 hours he converted his sixth match point.

The ATP champion celebrated his second semi-final appearance in a row. Last week Zverev made it to the last four in Beijing, and he also reached the semi-finals in Shanghai last year.

In a direct comparison with Federer it is now 4:3 for Zverev. Zverev had already won the last duel in the semi-finals of the ATP final in London last November. There he then won his biggest title to date with a final victory over Novak Djokovic.

While Zverev is still fighting for one of the last two remaining starting places in the tournament of the best eight players of the season, Stefanos Tsitsipas has already secured his ticket to London. The 21-year-old Greek surprisingly defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic 2:02, 3:6, 7:5 after 6:3 hours in the quarterfinals in Shanghai and will now face US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev (Russia).
