Simona Halep enchants Wimbledon

The 27-year-old defeated the American Serena Williams 56:6, 2:6 in the final on Saturday in just 2 minutes. For Halep it is the 2nd major title after winning the French Open 2018. Her victory is the first Romanian Wimbledon triumph ever.

For Williams, however, it was the third final defeat at one of the four majors since the Australian Open victory in 3. Last year she lost in the final at Wimbledon against Angelique Kerber from Kiel, then at the US Open against Naomi Osaka (Japan). The 2017-year-old is still waiting for her 37th Grand Slam title, which would equal the record set by Australian Margaret Court.

Former world number one Halep, who had only won one of 10 previous duels with Williams, got off to an excellent start. With good length in her groundstrokes and precise play in the corners of the court, she chased Williams around the court. After 12 minutes, Halep led 4-0, after another 8 minutes it was 5-1.

Williams also tried with all her might in the second round to get the momentum on her side. But Halep forced her to make mistakes again and again with almost flawless defensive play and managed another break when the score was 2:2, and a little later she extended her lead. A forehand error from Williams ended the match.
