Sinner bites into the second round

Solid is probably the most appropriate adjective that describes the performance of the South Tyrolean, who just turned 20, on Tuesday. He didn't exactly get the fans on Court 10 out of their seats that day, but he had everything under control (almost) at all times against Max Purcell (ATP 191), who was three years older than him. Sinner won after around two and a half hours with 6:4, 6:2, 4:6 and 6:2.

Sinner had a lot of trouble at the beginning in humid New York (it was 30 degrees). However, Purcell quickly seemed at his wits' end. Because the slice balls that he kept throwing in didn't hurt the youngster at all, on the contrary: the slow balls helped Sinner into the game and as a result he drove the doubles specialist across the court. The result was a quick break and a 5-2 lead. But when Sinner served to win the set and was already 30-0 in the lead, the Sexten player wobbled and made three slight errors that resulted in the re-break. However, Purcell was unable to extend the set any further; Sinner closed the game on the fourth attempt despite an underground serve rate (only 37% of the first attempts found the field). Second section without discussion While Sinner played the first set on the back burner, this changed in the second section. He now served better, put his opponent under constant pressure in his service games and thus managed two breaks. Because there was almost nothing in their own service games, Sinner won the set 6:2.

Unfortunately, the third round didn't continue at the same pace: as in the opening phase, Sinner didn't throw in enough first serves and thereby favored the game of Purcell, who now pushed to the net at every opportunity. There he showed off all his doubles qualities and got a break. In addition to the better playing opponent, the world number 16 had. Now another problem: He kept grabbing his thigh after a lunge and his movement became increasingly difficult. Nevertheless, he fended off three break points in the seventh game. But that wasn't enough to turn the set in his favor - 6:4 for Purcell.

Sinner then took a break, won a hard-fought game right at the start of the fourth period and then benefited from three double faults from his opponent. Sinner gratefully accepted the break as a gift and moved more smoothly as the game progressed. He moved away to 5:2 - and made everything clear as soon as Purcell served with one of the many cracking winners (49 in total). Afterwards, the South Tyrolean was clearly relieved as he celebrated his first victory at the US Open. Waiting for the next opponent In the second round Sinner will now face either the Italian Marco Cecchinato (ATP 81) or the American Zachary Svajda.

Immediately after Sinner's victory, Andreas Seppi, the second South Tyrolean in New York, also moved into the next round. He landed a surprising and memorable five-set win.

Despite initial difficulties, Jannik Sinner made it into the second round of the US Open. His opponent Max Purcell proved to be a higher hurdle than expected.
