Sinner & the ATP Finals: These are his chances

Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev have already qualified for the most important tournament on the ATP tour, although it is not yet entirely clear whether Djokovic will actually take part. However, Rafael Nadal's waiver is assured, which is why Sinner is virtually in ninth place in this special ranking (ATP Race). That wouldn't be enough to take part, because only the best eight fight for the prestigious title.

In addition to the already qualified professionals, Andrey Rublev and Matteo Berrettini also have the ticket almost immediately in their pockets. Behind them, a four-way battle has broken out in which Sinner plays a leading role: With 2925 points, the Norwegian Casper Ruud is in seventh place, followed by Hubert Hurkacz from Poland (2775) and Sinner (2505). Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada is also still in the race with 2320 points. The four players are separated by 605 points.

The schedule

This distance may seem large at first glance, but it is not when you look at the calendar. The two Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Paris-Bercy are still missing, and there is also the 500 event in Vienna and numerous other 250 tournaments that could tip the scales. There is plenty of time and points to make up for a deficit.

The outlook But who has the best cards? Ruud, who has often been labeled as a pure clay court specialist in the past, proved last week with the title at the 250 tournament in San Diego that he is also a tough nut to crack on hard courts - at least in outdoor conditions. The Norwegian could score big in Indian Wells before he then has to defend himself at the indoor tournaments in Europe. His indoor hard court statistics are miserable with three wins out of ten matches. Hurkacz's performance isn't outstanding either, but the 24-year-old showed with the title two weeks ago in Metz that he can play in such conditions.

In contrast, Sinner is a real indoor specialist. The big question regarding the Sexten player is how well he can adapt from the conditions in Sofia to those in Indian Wells. The 20-year-old also only has a few days to cope with the jet lag and adapt to the hot temperatures. But even if Sinner doesn't get far in California, nothing would be lost. Auger-Aliassime, on the other hand, already has his back to the wall.

Conclusion Ruud and Hurkacz have the best chance of success if they continue to play like they have been up to now. However, Sinner will leave no stone unturned to make an appearance in Turin after all. It is very likely that the Masters in Paris-Bercy will tip the balance in favor of one player. And if things come to a head, there will probably be a big showdown in Stockholm, at the last tournament before the ATP Finals.
